The latest boxing controversy accomplished one thing other than make me glad I didn’t pay to see Manny Pacquiao get robbed – it got me thinking of boxing and wanting to create a tribute to the self-proclaimed (and I agree) “greatest of all time,” Muhammad Ali. Personally, I grew up watching Mike Tyson (my favorite boxer of all time) but there’s no denying the greatness of Ali.
Mike Tyson is one of the two greatest boxers of all time. Period. End of story. Okay, it may not be that cut and dry but when I look at his meteoric rise to the heavyweight title coupled with his successful defenses and the fact that it seldom took him more than 3 rounds (or 3 minutes for that matter) to finish off an opponent I just have to put him up there right behind Ali and I’ll tell you this much, Ali’s rope-a-dope wouldn’t have worked on Tyson with the insane amount of power he packed in his punches. Not only was Tyson great but he was fun to watch because he wasn’t worried about the Chess match as much as the kill.
Unfortunately, Tyson’s demons ate at him and ultimately proved to be too much. After losing his belt to Buster Douglas, Tyson was never the same. From his abuse of Robin Givens to his biting part of Evander Holyfield’s ear off it was a steep downhill slide for the once great Tyson. Personally I have always held hope that he would get his life back together and up until recently had longed for him to get back in the ring and somehow find the speed and power that once made him the most dangerous man in the ring. But I have come to grips with the fact that the only action I’ll be seeing from the former champ is that which I can find in my collection of Tyson DVDs.
It is to the Tyson that showed so much promise yet was tortured by his demons whom I dedicate this illustration to. May he finally find inner peace and take control of the demons that have haunted him for so long.
I have wanted to do an illustration in honor of Iron Mike for a long time now and am not only satisfied that I finally took the time to do it but am pleased with how it turned out. Let me know what you think – ratings, comments and even criticisms (as long as they aren’t TOO nasty) are more than welcome.
